Eighty of The Senior Centre's members and staff took our annual trip 'doon the watter’ on the Waverley Paddle Steamer on Friday and had a fanatstic day.

Members had a great time soaking in the sights and entertainment on board before spending the afternoon in Dunoon. For some this meant a stroll round the shops and for others, fish and chips and a chat at the band stand before heading back to the boat and dancing the afternoon away on our journey back home to Glasgow.

Jeane Freeman, the Minister for Social Security, visited the Centre yesterday morning. After a tour of the building, our members had a chance to sit down with the MSP for a cup of tea. They told her about the Centre’s role in their lives and how the Centre, by giving members something to do and someone to do it with, prevents social isolation.

Today we welcomed the lovely Susan Calman to the centre to launch the National Lottery Awards 2018. It was great to show her around and tell her how we’re using National Lottery funding to tackle loneliness and isolation.

“I know first-hand how much joy dance brings so it was fantastic to come here today to see the brilliant work of The Senior Centre Castlemilk and what they do to support older people in the local community with the help of National Lottery funding. The line dancing group have certainly given me a run for my money!“
The Senior Centre is just one of the projects to have entered this year’s National Lottery Awards, the annual search to find the UK’s favourite National Lottery-funded projects. It’s rare to have an opportunity to celebrate the work of our staff, volunteers and everyone who uses the Centre so we are really hopeful to make it to the next stage!
National Lottery Award
National Lottery Award Posted on 14/12/17

The Senior Centre is delighted to announce that it has received a National Lottery award from the Big Lottery Fund.

Based in the heart of Castlemilk, The Senior Centre considers itself a ‘youth club for the over 55s.’ The Centre aims to prevent isolation and loneliness by encouraging participation and confidence building as individuals age.

The Senior Centre will use the award of £243,500 to continuing providing services over the next three years to over 400 older people from Castlemilk and the surrounding areas. The ‘Transforming Lives’ project aims to prevent loneliness and isolation by facilitating social inclusion. This is achieved by supporting members to build relationships through the provision of a varied range of social, health, educational and information based activities, from within the Centre and throughout the community.

The grant also ensures the salaries of three staff members including that of a driver, whose role is vital to ensuring that the Centre is accessible to all members.

Manager, Melanie O’Donnell said, “We are so excited to have received this award. One of the issues of an ageing population is that many older people feel desperately alone, especially if they outlive their partners and friends. This means it’s essential that projects like ours get this funding to help get them out of their homes and back to playing an active part in their communities again.”

Big Lottery Fund Scotland Chair, Maureen McGinn, said, “I am delighted that The Senior Centre has been successful in securing a Big Lottery Fund grant. The funding will make a big difference where it is needed most and I wish The Senior Centre every success as it goes on to develop and expand its project for the benefit of their local community.”

We held our second MacMillan Coffee Morning in the Centre last week and raised a grand total of £754.90 for the cause. Members came into the centre for free teas and coffees and bought from a selection of delicious home made cakes, scones and sweets. Raffle tickets were also sold in support of MacMillan. All money raised will go towards funding the fantastic work that MacMillan and their nurses do for those who are living with, or have a loved one living with, Cancer.

We’d also like to thanks the following businesses for generously donating prizes for the raffle - Gifto, Cardstop & Poundstop (The Hanrahans), The Brae's Barber, The Hair Salon, McDonald's Restaurant and the One O One at The Braes Shopping Centre, Stewart & Smith Podiatry, Tracy, Studio 56, Croft Bar, Victoria Hair Design, Flawless Health & Beauty, Mimosa, David's Framers, Dellos Chipshop, Tesco, Booker's, Marks and Spencer and finally to Dalmeny Park Country House Hotel.

We opened the doors to our members and the public on Saturday as part of Castlemilk's Fun Day celebrations. Our bottle stall and bingo games were a roaring success and our homebaking stall proved very popular too.

Thanks to the staff and volunteers who came in to help on their day off, to those who kindly made donations for the bottle stall, Brenda, Lainy & Millie for all the baking and to Castlemilk Youth Complex who provided face painting for the kids.

Thanks also go to everyone who came along to the centre for a visit - we'll see you next year!

We were lucky enough to be chosen as one of three Castlemilk charities to be a recipient of the Co-op’s Local Community Fund.

After six months of fundraising in store we were invited along to our local Co-op and were presented with a cheque for £4179. Our share of money raised by Co-op members shopping in store and using the services of Co-op Funeralcare.

This money will go towards providing social inclusion opportunities such as trips, classes and events for our members - all of which come from Castlemilk and its surrounding areas.
